On the 29th of August, myself, Madie, Elena, Dorothy and Jamie set off on a road trip from Cape Town towards the Cedarberg for what was going to be the beginning of a 5952km journey over the next 10 days. We had just started our Spring Break, so we left varsity in the afternoon for our first night in Cedarberg. Arriving at Sanddrif campsite at 9pm, we were ready to start this trip with some delicious braai broodjies and lamb chops under the stars.

Me, Madie, Elena, Dorothy and Jamie are packed and ready to get comfortable for the beginning of the NamTrip.

At the crack of dawn some of us got up to jump from Malgat in the crispy cold river water. After breakfast we were all ready to hike up to the Wolfberg Cracks for a little adventure. It was a sunny but crisp spring day, with traces of snow on the mountain teasing us as it melts in the hot sun.

Just after we got to the start of the cracks we basked in the sun in awe, watching and listening to the light rays illuminating the water drops falling from the shale and sandstone cracks for seconds at a time.

That night we met up with the first other group of UCT students that we would be encountering in odd spots for the remainder of the the trip. The five of us snuggled up in our little warm tent for our last night in Cedarberg, ready for the long day ahead.

We woke up before sunrise to take the 848 km trip up to the Fish River Canyon through Namakwaland, where we stopped to play in the glimmering yellow and orange flower fields.

As we crossed the border into Namibia we knew we made it. Namibia's landscape stretches bare with a Mars-like setting. We hit the ruthless Namibian gravel road which took us straight to the Canon Road House to secure a camping spot in the dried out river in the middle of the desert.

We got straight back into the car to make it in time for sunset at the Fish River Canyon. Now, I've been to the Grand Canyon before and coming to Fish River Canyon reminded me of the vastness of these valleys. The view mesmerised our senses and kept us in awe of an unforgettable sunset which ended the long day of driving on a good note as we took the final drive back to our campsite at the Canon road house. exhausted from more than 10 hours of driving, we made supper and rested before our second big day of driving to Sossusvlei. This will be shared in part II of the Namibia Road trip blog post so watch this space!
